www.fitin15.ca targets barriers to becoming more active

No time, too tired for fitness say Canadians

Toronto, ON – Almost 90 per cent of Canadians aged 25 to 65 say they would like to be more physically active, but more than half report they either don’t have the time or are too tired to act on their good intentions according to a recent Ipsos Reid survey conducted for the Canadian Chiropractic Association. “These findings tell us Canadians need help getting past the barriers to regular physical activity,” says Dr. Annette Bourdon. “That’s why the profession is launching Fit-in 15: The 15 minute fitness habit, a free public education website aimed at helping sedentary Canadians get a habit started with 15 minutes a day.”

The Fit-in 15 website www.fitin15.ca encourages Canadians to start a fitness habit by fitting in 15 minutes of focused activity at a scheduled time each day. “Fit-in 15 understands that the couch looks good after a tough day, that intentions are often sacrificed to doing the laundry, running the car pool and paying the bills,” says Dr. Bourdon. “The goal of Fit-in 15 is to help busy folks squeeze a small amount of directed activity into their day as a manageable way to start a habit that can grow over time.”

The highly interactive site features a personalized calendar for recording daily physical activity, an e-mail tips and motivation subscription, and simple no-cost, no-equipment ideas to personalize 15 minutes of cardio, strength and/or flexibility activities. One of the features is a clickable human figure that lets you highlight areas of the body, click to learn about the muscle groups, and then choose from a menu of simple stretches and strength exercises for that area.
“Fifteen minutes a day can start you on your way to a habit that can grow and deliver terrific health benefits,” says Dr. Bourdon. “Now that the warm weather and longer days are back with us, it’s a great time to step outside and fit-in a 15 minute walk or go in the backyard and try some of the stretches you can find on the website. I encourage anyone who wants to get started to log-on to www.fitin15.ca.”
